Maui is the best all-round snorkeling island in Hawaii: more beginner-friendly beach entries than anywhere else, three protected marine reserves, resident turtle populations you can reach from the sand — and the most famous boat trip in the state sitting three miles offshore. Filter the spots below.
Shore or boat?
Start from shore: Turtle Town at Maluaka Beach, Black Rock and Kapalua Bay deliver turtles and calm water for free. Then decide on Molokini Crater — the sunken crater with 100-ft-plus visibility that’s boat-only, roughly $150–200 for a morning tour from Ma’alaea, most adding a Turtle Town stop. Book mornings; afternoon wind chops the crater.
Season notes
West and south Maui snorkel year-round. The exception is Honolua Bay, which is glorious in summer and a surf break in winter. Whale season (November–April) turns every boat tour into a whale watch at no extra charge.
