Most “best snorkeling in Hawaii” articles are one person’s vacation, written up once and never checked again. This site takes the opposite approach: it’s a research project. Here’s exactly how it works, so you can judge the guides for yourself.
What we review for every spot
Before a spot enters our database, we review at least: several independent firsthand trip reports (travel blogs and recent video, so we can see actual conditions, entries and visibility rather than take a single person’s word); tour operator pages for prices, durations and departure points; and the official source for every rule and fee — the City & County of Honolulu for Hanauma Bay, Hawaii DLNR for reserves and wildlife rules, Ha’ena State Park for north-shore Kauai, and NOAA Fisheries for marine-life distances. Experiential claims are attributed to the named reviewer who made them; fees and rules are only ever cited to official sources.
How rankings are scored
Six criteria, equally weighted: reef quality and marine life · typical water clarity · ease of entry · safety (lifeguards, currents, seasonal surf) · crowding · logistics (fees, parking, reservations). Where firsthand reports disagree, we say so in the guide rather than pretend consensus exists.
What we don’t do
We don’t claim to have personally snorkeled these spots — this is compiled research by a data researcher, not a trip diary, and every guide says so. We don’t rank spots higher because a tour pays better. And we don’t publish a fee, an opening time or a reservation rule without an official source behind it.
Verification and updates
Every page shows a “Facts verified” date. Hawaii’s rules genuinely change — Hanauma Bay’s fees, hours and reservation system have all changed in recent years — so fees, hours and reservation details are re-checked on a rolling schedule, and immediately when a reader flags something.
Corrections and local knowledge
If you live in Hawaii, guide tours, or have just come back from one of these spots and something in a guide is wrong or outdated — tell us. Corrections are credited. Bloggers and photographers whose work informs a guide are always cited and linked; if we’ve cited you and you’d like anything changed, the same address reaches us.
