Kauai’s snorkeling runs on one seasonal switch: the legendary north shore (Tunnels, Ke’e, Anini) is a summer destination, while the south shore (Poipu) works every day of the year. Time your island right and Kauai rivals anywhere in the state. Filter the spots below.
North shore — May to September
Tunnels Beach is the headliner: a horseshoe reef with caverns, ledges and grazing turtles. Parking now runs through the Ha’ena State Park reservation system, which also covers Ke’e Beach at the end of the road — book before you fly. Anini Beach, behind the island’s longest fringing reef, is the calmest north-shore water and needs no reservation.
South and east — year-round
Poipu Beach is the reliable one: lifeguards, a keiki pond, turtles, and occasionally a napping Hawaiian monk seal (keep 50 feet back — they’re endangered and protected). Lydgate Park’s rock-walled lagoons on the east side are the easiest water on Kauai for small kids.
